Theology of Giving

Jesus talked about money more than any other topic, not because he needed money, but because he knew it would compete with him for first place in our lives. He knew our view of money is a heart issue and part of our spiritual growth.

1.)  We can’t serve both money and Jesus.

Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate the one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Luke 16:13).

2.)  How we use money reflects what we really value.

We give our money to the people, places, and things we love and value. Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be” (Matthew 6:21).

3.)  We should bring 10% of what God has entrusted to us back to him.

While speaking to the Pharisees, Jesus said, “You are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law – justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things” (Matthew 23:23). If you’re not giving anything, giving 10% might feel like a big jump. Just start somewhere – pick a percentage and build from there because…

4.) We will be blessed when we give to God first.

Jesus said, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full – pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (Luke 6:38).
